Now that Jagex has launched Ace of Spades, it’s time to talk about the company’s next game. Transformers Universe is an upcoming free-to-play multiplayer game that will be entering closed beta in the future. Beta signups are being accepted on the recently launched Transformers Universe website. You’ll be able to sign up as an Autobot or Decepticon.
Transformers Universe won’t be an MMORPG with features similar to World of Warcraft. Instead, Jagex is taking a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) approach with this game. That means you won’t be going around killing 10 random creatures in exchange for a consumable item or weapon. That’s not the vision Jagex chief creative director Alex Horton had when he first joined the project.
Speaking to Edge, Horton explained why the traditional questing system was removed from Transformers Universe.
“Transformers are about war; they’re about action,” Horton said. “They don’t carry gold, bake bread, catch fish, cut down trees. But for all they take away, they throw open so many more opportunities. Maybe there’s more in a selection of characters and abilities, and the strategy in that, than there is [in] leveling a character endlessly and going through fuck loads of boss battles.”
In Transformers Universe, you’ll choose from five Jagex-designed Transformers to take into battle. You’ll directly control one Transformer at a time. Should that robot fall in battle, you can choose from one of the other four. The objective of each match is to harvest 1,000 units of Energon from extraction fields. Both sides will be fighting over control of these fields. The defeat of an opposing Transformer or Terrorcon will net you experience that will eventually lead to your team leveling up.
More news regarding Transformers Universe will be announced soon. For now, try your luck in getting in to the beta.
