After entering closed beta in July of 2011, Family Guy Online will go offline on January 18, 2013. Emails confirming the game’s closure began going out this afternoon, and a formal message is posted on the Family Guy Online website as well. After January 18, no one will be able to log in to their Family Guy Online profile or account. No reason was given for the game’s closure.
Although Family Guy Online is free-to-play, some players have spent real money on the game. If you made a purchase at any time between October 22 and December 21, you’ll get a refund by January 10.
PayPal and credit card transactions will be refunded by January 10. Ultimate Game Card purchases will be refunded with another Ultimate Game Card code that will be equal to the amount you spent on in-game purchases. Those codes will be delivered via email. Ultimate Game Card codes will also be extended to those who used some other kind of payment method for Family Guy Online.
I only played a small portion of Family Guy Online, but it never hooked me. Basing a MMO off a very popular television show seems like a win-win, but something obviously went very wrong. Maybe word-of-mouth wasn’t as widespread as it should have been. In any event, there is no shortage of free-to-play MMOs out there today. Not all of them are destined for success.
