The next major Don’t Starve update will happen on Tuesday, January 15. Today, we learned exactly what this update will contain. It’s called Spoiled Rotten, and it adds a whole new level of difficulty to the game. It will no longer be possible to horde food. All those berries and slabs of meat you’ve collected will eventually spoil. Eating spoiled foods will certainly be detrimental to your health.

So what do you have to do to keep your food from going bad? The ice box my friends, the ice box. The ice box can store nine different units of food. It’ll be interesting to see what the requirements are for making the ice box.

If you want to keep eating rotten food, you can choose to play as a new character called The Automaton (aka Wx78). The Automaton is a robot that can’t be harmed by eating spoiled food. Why would a robot need to eat you ask? I have no idea.

Some other new additions to Don’t Starve include small birds that can grow up to be tall birds, beefalo with red bottoms and a walking chest named Chester. Think of Chester as a lovable dog that will happy follow you around while carrying your extra items.

Later in the month, Klei will introduce the new research system. The team is also working on adding the winter season, the sanity meter and a new level progression system.
