Sony has been really supportive of bringing massively multiplayer online games to the PlayStation 3. FreeRealms, DC Universe Online and Dust 514 are a few examples of MMOs on the platform, but we can add another one to the list this April called Defiance. Defiance is being developed by Trion Worlds (End of Nations, Rift) and will be playable across PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Cross platform play unfortunately won’t be supported.

Defiance is a third-person shooter that takes place in the San Francisco Bay area of the United States. We’ll play as Ark Hunters who have been hired to find equipment that will restore the Earth to its former state. While doing this, we’ll come under constant attack by mutants, raiders, hellbugs, ninety-niners (cyborgs) and scrappers (robots). Defiance will let players complete missions and side quests alone or team with a bunch of friends. There are also competitive modes with other players that are optional.

Now let’s talk price. Trion Worlds decided not to attach a monthly subscription fee to Defiance. Instead, you only have to purchase the game at the standard retail price to have constant access to all the content. You can pre-order the most basic edition for $59 which includes an exclusive weapon, a beta invite, 3-day XP boost and a special outfit. There’s also a deluxe edition for $99, a collector’s edition that’s also $99 and an ultimate edition for $149 that can only be purchased at GameStop.
