The Wii U Virtual Console is expected to launch after Nintendo implements one of two system updates for the Wii U this spring. When it launches, only certain games will be available to play on the Wii U GamePad. Select games from the NES and Super Nintendo will be supported on day one (Game Boy Advance comes later). The Wii U Virtual Console service will also support backing up saved games and will provide access to the Miiverse community. But what if you’ve already purchased games on the Wii Virtual Console? Nintendo won’t give you the Wii U version for free, but it will offer significant discounts should you choose to transfer and buy those games again.
Any NES Virtual Console games you purchased on the Wii will cost $1 on Wii U. Super Nintendo games will set you back $1.50. The normal price for NES games range from $4.99 to $5.99, and Super NES games range from $7.99 to $8.99.
Nintendo is also running a new promotion to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Famicon (NES) release in Japan. It’s called the Wii U Virtual Console Trial Campaign. For the next six months, one NES or Super NES title will be made available to purchase each month for $0.30. This month’s game is Balloon Fight. The rest of the games are listed below.
- February – F-Zero
- March – Punch Out! Featuring Mr. Dream
- April – Kirby’s Adventure
- May – Super Metroid
- June – Yoshi
- July – Donkey Kong
