Retailers are trying all sorts of things as pre-order bonuses these days. Buy here and get new character skins! Purchase from us and get a new weapon! Pre-order here to prevent us kicking puppies! OK, I may have made up that last one, but you get the point. Gears of War: Judgment is on its way March 19. Those who pre-order at GameStop will get three days of early access to the demo. That will run from 2:59 a.m. ET on Saturday, March 16, through 2:59 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 19. Everyone else will get to try that demo on March 19, when the game launches.
The big carrot in that Gears of War: Judgment demo is Overrun mode, a fusion of the Horde and Beast modes popularized in previous Gears installments. A team of COG soldiers must fortify and defend an objective, while the Locust troops attack. The COG now have a class-based system including Snipers and Medics. As the Locusts kill COGs and destroy defenses, they can unlock more powerful troops. During the next round, players switch sides.
Judgment is a prequel starring Damon Baird, the jokester of Delta Squad. We’ll learn that although he’s a serious smartass, he’s a soldier willing to take big risks to save his teammates. The game begins 15 years before Gears of War, with Baird and Augustus “Cole Train” Cole still members of Kilo Squad. They’re court martialed by an officer who doesn’t approve of Kilo Squad’s methods. He doesn’t yet realize what’s going to become painfully obvious to the COG: the Locust aren’t an ordinary enemy. Thus the previous tactics used against human opponents aren’t going to work.
They don’t want a particular piece of land, or to avenge some perceived wrong. They want humanity’s extinction. As Gears games have progressed, the Locust have seemed less threatening. The inclusion of the Lambent sort of demoted the Locust Horde to second-tier villain status. Going back 15 years in time, Epic promises that the Locust will scare us again.
