Wargaming is best known for their work with World of Tanks and World of Warplanes. This European game developer has seen a lot of success with World of Tanks on PC, and is taking the next big step into console development. Wargaming just purchased Chicago-based Day 1 Studios for $20 million. Wargaming will use its new U.S. location, now called Wargaming West, to begin production on a console game.

Wargaming didn’t go into detail about what kind of console game it will create. Our guess is the game will be released on the next wave of consoles since this generation is nearing its end. It wouldn’t be surprising if Wargaming continued its free-to-play legacy on consoles.

Day 1 Studios developed games such as the original F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. 3, Fracture and two MechAssault games. Its purchase by Wargaming for $20 million is quite unexpected. According to a GameSpot report from 2011 Day 1 Studios laid off around 100 employees after a publishing deal fell through with Konami. For that money, Wargaming could have nearly swept the recent THQ auction.

Nevertheless, we’re looking forward to see what Wargaming can bring to consoles.
