Prepare for the latest Xbox Live update. We’ll start with Special Forces: Team X, a 3rd person cover-based shooter from Zombie Studios. This cel-shaded shooter is set in a not-too-distant future that sees the major political powers giving up on diplomacy. Instead, they’ll settle their differences with clandestine teams of insanely well-equipped soldiers.
The emphasis is on team play. You’ll earn more upgrade points for being a good teammate than a lone wolf. That’s a welcome dynamic as people online are often more concerned with their own killstreaks. I love games that reward that support role, because I’m not about to rack up 30 kills in a game. The game’s map selection system allows players to pick individual map components. That offers more than 100 map configurations. Gameplay supports 2-4 teams through five different modes. Characters can choose two equips for the battlefield, ranging from grenades to attack dogs. Team X is 1200 Microsoft Points. ($15)
Microsoft wants you to think of your Xbox 360 as a total entertainment machine. Redbox Instant, coming soon to the 360 exclusively, is another step down that path. For $8 a month for DVD or $9 a month for Blu-Ray, you get four one-night credits for movie rentals at a Redbox kiosk and unlimited movie streaming. Even without a subscription, 360 owners are able to buy and rent digital releases.
The demo for long-awaited Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is now here. Raiden is now a half-human cybernetic soldier with a high-frequency katana blade. Because hey, that kind of stuff happens in video games. If this demo piques your interest, the full game will be available on Feb. 19.
The Deal of the Week is on arcade hits. Hydrophobia is 160 MP. Hybrid, Zeno Clash Ultimate Edition and Earthworm Jim HD can all be yours for 400 MP each. Alan Wake’s American Nightmare and Orcs Must Die are both 600 MP each.
