The GameStick is steadily approaching its grand debut. In April, we’ll finally see if this highly successful Kickstarter project manages to live up to the hype. Kickstarter backers will get theirs before everyone else, but PlayJam also just started accepting pre-orders for everyone else. $79 is all it takes to bring the Android console into your home.
There are also a couple optional accessories available for pre-order as well. The GameStick Dock for example is $24.99. This peripheral has several uses. It can house additional storage, charge the GameStick and provide access to USB ports. There is also a GameStick case for $9.99. The GameStick is only coming in white for general pre-orders as the multicolored options were reserved for Kickstarter backers.
It’s going to be a very interesting year for consoles. We’re expecting the next PlayStation and Xbox this year, and Nintendo is certainly going attempt to make up for low Wii U sales. With low-cost Android consoles such as the GameStick and Ouya, we’ll be able to see if the public truly is ready to move away from traditional consoles from the major players. Even if Android consoles in their current state can’t topple the big three, they may just lay the seeds for what’s to come in the future. As we all know, the mobile landscape changes every year as companies try to keep up with each other. In two years time, Android devices as we know them will be much more powerful and capable. In ten years their functionality will be unfathomable. This is only the beginning.
