Deep Down

Capcom had presence at the PlayStation event today, but it wasn’t there to show off any one game in particular. Capcom wanted to show off some technology. Specifically, it wanted to show us its new Panta Rhei engine. Panta Rhei will be used in an upcoming game for the PS4. Capcom demonstrated the engine running in a game with the working title of Deep Down.

Deep Down looked like a really graphically advanced version of Dark Souls. In the video, a man wearing a suit of armor confronts a dragon that relentlessly drowns him in fire. The graphics were very nice, and I’m not really convinced some of it wasn’t CGI. If this really is what Capcom is working with, Deep Down is going to be extremely eye pleasing when it releases.

One interesting thing to consider is whether Deep Down is really just a code name for another Dragon’s Dogma game. Dragon’s Dogma was a surprise hit in 2012, and Capcom is re-releasing it this April with extra content as Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. Then again, a game like this could also power a new Monster Hunter game. It’s a fact Monster Hunter games sell systems, so it would be in Capcom and Sony’s best interest to appease that crowd as soon as possible.

Check out the video below to see Deep Down and Panta Rhei in action.
