Sony’s support of free-to-play games is expanding today with Uncharted 3. When the PlayStation Store updates this afternoon/evening, the competitive multiplayer component of Uncharted 3 will be free for everyone. There wont’ be any limit as to how long you can play, but you can only reach level 15 before the game stops you from progressing.
Anything you do after reaching level 15 will be tracked, but you won’t unlock any new gameplay features until you pay to remove the cap. You can also pay to unlock gameplay modes such as Co-op Adventure, Co-op Arena, DLC packs and the full single player game. If you don’t want to deal with unlocking anything, you can purchase the Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Game of the Year Edition for $39.99 from the PlayStation Store. Existing players will get a special in-game shirt and a Naughty Dog Paw icon.
Naughty Dog says it will continue to update Uncharted 3 multiplayer with more items as the months go on. The downloadable content will carry a specific theme as well.
It could be a coincidence, but Killzone 3‘s multiplayer was made free-to-play almost exactly one year ago. It too had a level cap, but there weren’t as many single unlockables.
