Team Fortress 2 came out in 2007. Ever since then, the game has gotten free updates that not only kept it relevant, but also kept players constantly coming back. Just when you may have though TF2 couldn’t possibly get any better, we learn it’s the first game to support the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.
Oculus Rift development kits are going out to Kickstarter backers this month. Team Fortress 2 will be updated this week with a new VR mode that will enable all the greatness the Oculus Rift is capable of. Valve is also giving every Oculus Rift Kickstarter backer access to a new Oculus Rift hat for TF2 characters.
You may recall how Doom 3 BFG was supposed to be the first Oculus Rfit game. Unfortunately, that game won’t support the Oculus Rift at launch. To make up for it, the Oculus Rift team is offering compensation in the form of a $20 Steam Waller credit, a $25 Oculus Store credit or even a full refund.
We checked out the Oculus Rift this past January at CES. In our session with the device, we learned it wasn’t just smoke and mirrors. Even in its unfinished state, the Oculus Rift was amazing. It nails what we all though virtual reality should be. It’s possible to lose yourself when the Oculus Rift is strapped to your face. I personally can’t wait for the consumer version to be released. That’s when I think the next generation of video games will really begin.
