If you wanted a Pikachu 3DS XL, you may have already missed your chance. Nintendo wasn’t kidding when it said this was a “limited edition” system. Target stores are already selling out of their stock. As I can attest, the special edition 3DS with Pikachu on the lid was doled out sparingly to stores and, as a result, was selling out shortly after it opened.

The Target in Arlington Heights, Illinois received three Pikachu 3DS XLs. I was there at 7am and there was already a line forming. By the time the store opened at 8, there were eleven of us. I remember dashing to the electronics department, hearing a crowd of teenagers behind me chanting, “Pikachu!” Upon reaching electronics, we found the item still hadn’t been retrieved from the store room. By the time the box was found, there were 18 people waiting, all for a Pikachu 3DS XL. That’s when the bad news came – there were only three in that store. The store I visited also only had 12 copies of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, which also sold out.

Fellow GamerTell editor Jeremy Hill experienced the same thing in Fayetteville, Georgia. Except there, he was the only one waiting and there were only two Pikachu 3DS XLs available. Well, one after he left.

So if you want a Pikachu 3DS XL and haven’t bought one yet, be prepared to hunt for it. Both Toys R Us and Walmart have a price-matching policy. Grab a Target ad from your Sunday paper, head to one of those stores and get your Pikachu 3DS XL for $159.99 from there. Call ahead first, to be sure they actually have it. Perhaps see if they’ll hold one on the side for you.

Also, Toys R Us has a Pikachu 3DS XL promotion until March 30, 2013. The system is $179.99 there, but a $20 Toys R Us gift card comes with it.

Don’t forget, there’s a 3DS XL promotion going on with Nintendo! If you buy any 3DS XL and a copy of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, you also get a free, downloadable copy of Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone, Freakyforms Deluxe or Star Fox 64 3D.

Do you think there will be more?

      Nintendo hasn’t made any comment.

Personally, I doubt it. In Japan, this was a pre-order only 3DS where people had only about a month to place an order for it at a Pokecenter, and only people who did that got one.

“Best Buy and Walmart have a price-matching policy. Grab a Target ad from your Sunday paper, head to one of those stores”… If i remember correctly, Press release specified that only Walmart, target, GameStop, & toy r us were selling these.

I could have sworn I saw the Pikachu 3DS XL in Best Buy’s Sunday ad, but I’m not seeing it on the store’s website, so it looks like you’re right.

The Target in Bossier City, LA only received 2 and had not put them out when I got there at 9am. I was the first person to ask so I got one and the couple that showed up behind me got one and that was it for our Target. The price was right and then an additional 5% off for purchasing it with a Target credit card

There was 3 at the target in Midwest city and 3 if us waiting at door at open. It was funny to see people 2 minutes later running to electronics department trying to get one. They were sold out in 3 mins if opening of the store where they were sitting behind the counter as we ran up
