The multiplayer online battle arena game genre is quite popular. When a game type is all the rage, is isn’t long before those with the rights to licensed characters try to cash in. Guardians of Middle Earth brought the Lord of the Rings characters into MOBAs, and put them on consoles. Warner Bros. is going even bigger now. It will tap some of the most famous DC Comics characters, and their alternate universe versions, for an MOBA. Turbine, the studio behind Lord of the Rings Online, is doing Infinite Crisis. It is not directly based on the DC miniseries of the same name. The game will deal with DC’s multiverse, and the large number of characters and conflicts in play throughout.
Infinite Crisis will feature characters from DC’s 52 parallel universes, giving it a ridiculous amount of source material to draw from. The initial preview features the steampunk Batman from “Gotham by Gaslight,” and the vampire version from “Batman vs. Dracula: Red Rain.” The regular version of the Caped Crusader is on hand as well.
Perhaps you’d like to throw down with Superman: Red Son? In that storyline, baby Kal-El landed in Russia where he would grow up to fight for truth, justice and the Communist way. Maybe we’ll get to use Superboy Prime, a teen version of Supes driven insane while trapped in a world where he will never become Superman. Of course, there are the heroes from the main DC universe to use too.
Just thinking about the Infinite Crisis character combos is a mini-game of its own. If this property is handled right, there is so much potential. Confirmed so far are the two versions of Batman previously mentioned, Doomsday, The Flash, Green Lantern, The Joker, Poison Ivy, Shazam, Wonder Woman and Zatanna.
Here’s the trailer.
Infinite Crisis will be free-to-play when it launches later this year on PC. You can sign up to participate in the beta at the Infinite Crisis.
