Were you looking for The Last Guardian at E3 2013? If so, you probably came away disappointed. There was absolutely no mention of the highly anticipated Team Ico game. Which shouldn’t have been too surprising, given it’s troubled development cycle and general ephemeral existence, but still. If we can see Final Fantasy Versus XIII appear and transform into Final Fantasy XV, we should at least get a new The Last Guardian trailer.
Alas, it was not to be. Instead, we received floundering. CVG learned from Sony Worldwide Studios’ Shuhei Yoshida that it is still in development at Japan Studio, with a number of staff working on the project. Yoshida then reaffirmed Sony’s commitment to the game and that it hopes to have the next official announcement concerning the game provide concrete and reliable details concerning the game’s progress and future.
Unfortunately, Yoshida offered CVG nothing more than a guarantee that The Last Guardian still exists and Fumito Ueda and Japan Studio are working on it. There are no new screenshots, no new demo videos and no new information on gameplay. We don’t even know if it will still be released on the PS3, or if all of this extended development has transformed it into a PS4 title.
Call me pessimistic, but at this point I think it would be best if we all pretended The Last Guardian doesn’t even exist. That way, if it does someday appear on the PS4, we can all be pleasantly surprised. If we keep thinking and wondering about it now, it will never live up to its eventual hype and we may experience a dramatic letdown if it is, in fact, eventually revealed to be vaporware. Let’s focus on the good PS3, PS4 and Vita games we will be getting instead, like The Last of Us, inFamous: Second Son and Tearaway.
