There’s nothing like finding out a fantastic game is getting freed from exclusivity. That’s what’s happening with PixelJunk Monsters. Long has it been tied to the PS3 and PSP, but that’s about to change. In Summer 2013, PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate HD is coming to both Vitas and PCs. Amazing tower-defense adventures for all!

PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate HD will start out on the Vita first. Double Eleven is confident that it will do well there, despite the Vita not being the strongest handheld on the block. After a brief bit of time there, it will scurry its way onto both Windows and Macs. Meaning a huge audience is about to experience and enjoy a game that has been limited to Sony platforms for years.

The best part is, PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate HD is going to be the definitive incarnation. It will include the base PixelJunk Monsters game. It will also include various add-ons and upgrades released to the PS3 incarnation after its launch, like an Encore level pack. Not to mention, it’ll probably look just a little bit prettier. I mean, it’s not like you can suddenly add “hd” to the end of a game’s title without doing a little graphical tweaking.

Though really, the Vita version of PixelJunk Monsters Ultimate HD will probably be the one most people will end up buying. That’s because it will have an edge that all other version of PixelJunk Monsters won’t. To start, it has trophies. I’m not a huge collector nut who has to have all of them, but there are people who like seeing that pop up when they accomplish something. The PC versions might have them too, if they’re available through Steam, but still. No guarantees yet. More importantly, the Vita version will be the only one with touch-screen controls. That’s pretty big. Granted, the PSP version of PixelJunk Monsters is already compatible with the Vita and will probably be cheaper, but still. I think the Vita version could be the winner here.
