The news that Grand Theft Auto V will be squatting on 8GB of my PS3’s hard drive due to a mandatory install stings. That’s a big chunk of memory! You folks with newer PS3s that have at least 160GB hard drives could consider that a mosquito bite, but those of us with HDDs under 80GB will feel that sting.
Yet, we should be used to this by now. If you have a PS3, you have to accept the inevitable mandatory install. It happens. It helps us build a bond. Besides, it isn’t like Grand Theft Auto V is the only game noshing on our hard drives. There have been plenty of space hogs released throughout this console’s lifespan.
So, in an effort to perhaps soften the Grand Theft Auto V mandatory install blow, I decided to sift through my game library and point out that it really, probably, possibly isn’t that bad, by going through 10 of the largest mandatory installs I see in my library. Let’s take a look.
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots hid 4.6GB
- Devil May Cry 4 had 5GB
- Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds scored 5GB
- BioShock and BioShock 2 each sucked up 5GB
- Fallout: New Vegas stole 5GB
- Yakuza 3 “borrowed” 5GB
- Yakuza: Dead Souls gobbled 5.1GB
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim occupied 5.5GB
- Rage hogs 8GB
- And Grand Theft Auto V will need 8GB
Okay, that doesn’t really make me feel loads better about the Grand Theft Auto V mandatory install. At least if I abandon Yakuza: Dead Souls, I’ll only have to worry about having about 3GB more free for it!
Are there any other PS3 games I’ve missed that had a crazy mandatory install? Let us know in the comments. Though really, I can’t imagine there are many more games that push past the 5GB point.
