I don’t want to report about this, but I have to. It isn’t that I don’t like The Mortal Instruments. I devoured the first book, City of Bones, in a little over two hours last week and really enjoyed not only the story, but the mythology surrounding it. I’m not real pleased with the trailers and casting for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, though, so that’s tainting my thoughts on the series at the moment. Which is why I’m also skeptical about PlayFirst’s The Mortal Instruments Android and iOS game. Yup, there’s now a The Mortal Instruments game.
It’s horrible, I know. I haven’t even played it yet, so I shouldn’t be judging, but I am. Let me tell you what’s up with The Mortal Instruments mortal, and you can make your own snap judgements and give it a try.
The Mortal Instruments lets players create his or her own Shadowhunter character. You choose a gender and class, then fight missions around New York to help keep the peace and stop the various supernatural factions from getting out of hand. Fighting through missions helps characters level up, which gives them access to new skills that can be used in a fight. There are also various runes that can be purchased and equipped, which allow for special abilities in battle. There are some story segments, so if you haven’t read the book, you may want to wait until you’ve read City of Bones or seen the movie to avoid potential spoilers.
Naturally, there are some pay-to-play elements in The Mortal Instruments. There are two premium characters, priced at $0.99 each. Also, gems are used to purchase items/unlock things, and it’s possible to spend real money to get bonuses. It’s only been out for a few days, so it’s hard to say if there’s a point in the game where people will be unable to proceed unless they either grind through the easier missions like crazy or pitch in real cash.
