Out of everything I was scheduled to look at during PAX Prime 2013, the Stinky Footboard was what I looked forward to most. After I saw the video of it in action, I hoped that it would be the answer for the problem many of us gamers face — too many buttons to push and not enough fingers.
Currently the most popular way to add extra keybindings is to use a mouse with extra buttons. I’ve tried this and have always found those buttons to be in the way of using the mouse for anything else. Using the thumb to push the small buttons on the side isn’t always easily done either. Another way is to put extra buttons on the keyboard, but then you’d have to move the hand from the movement buttons which isn’t a good idea if you need to run and attack at the same time.
The Stinky Footboard puts four extra buttons, plus four more diagonal buttons, in a footpad that you control with your foot. By using the included software, which supports profiles for different games or other applications, you can do some amazing things.
Let’s say you’re playing an MMO and you have the main action bar with your perfect keybindings, and a second action bar with those same keybindings plus a modifier key. Pressing alt+w or control+t isn’t the easiest thing to do, especially if you’re in a pinch. One way is to put modifier keys on the Stinky Footboard and when you need to use that 2nd, 3rd, or 4th action bar you press an easily accessible key on the keyboard plus one of the Stinky Footboard buttons.
Or you’re playing a game that has you do the same action or actions multiple times, such as leaning left or right in a first-person shooter. Instead of using keyboard or mouse buttons you can put those actions on the Stinky Footboard and free up the keyboard for more important abilities.
As much as we’d like, we can’t play games all of the time and the Stinky Footboard has some non-gaming uses. You can put some common actions, such as copying and pasting for when you’re writing an email or page up and down when browsing.
There are three different types of springs, each with a different strength, that come included to make it easier or harder to push the buttons. You can use more than one board at a time and, thanks to the aluminum top, your feet can rest on them with no worries.
Whether you’re a gamer, or just want to free up using repetitive keyboard combos, the Stinky Footboard is an amazing and wonderful product. It’s something I wish had been around a long time ago and will make gaming a lot more enjoyable.
