Companion apps are really popular these days. They can really expand a game’s functionality while making sure you never completely leave the game’s world. Grand Theft Auto V is the latest game to get a companion app. It’s called Grand Theft Auto: iFruit, and it lets you customize your in-game car and train your in-game dog wherever you are. It’s only available for iOS devices at this time. It’s free, but be prepared to give up 444MB to install it.
In order to use any of these features, you have to have a Rockstar Games Social Club account and link it to your PSN or Xbox Live profile. Doing this will enable the game to automatically apply any changes you made within the app.
The car customization tool is called Los Santos Customs. It’s here where you can choose different color schemes for your car, change the tires, rims and make other cosmetic changes. Upgrades such as armor are also available. You can also create your own vanity license plate that no one else can use within the game. Don’t bother trying to register “OUTATIME.” I tried and it’s already taken.
The app also includes a mini-game called Chop the Dog. Chop belongs to Franklin (one of the three playable characters) in GTA V. You can interact with Chop in the app to determine how he behaves in the game. You’ll be doing things such as feeding him, giving him water and teaching him tricks. There are also mini-games that has Chop defending a car, ripping bikinis off women (seriously) and chasing male dogs away from a female dog.
The icons for GTA III and Vice City are just shortcuts to the full game in the real Apple App Store. The main attraction are the two features I just mentioned.
iFruit will also come to Android, Windows Phone, PlayStation Mobile and the Vita in the future.
