I was doing some casual internet surfing earlier this month when I came across news that Double Fine began selling a selection of Psychonauts action figures from its online store. I, like a lot of people, have a lot of respect for Psychonauts and wanted to own a physical figure based on one of the characters. I thought spending $7 before shipping for a random blind box figure was a little expensive, but I convinced myself it was worth it for a one off thing. I bought a single blind box and was looking forward to getting it in the mail.
Over the next few days, I tracked the package until it arrived at my local post office. I was expecting a couple packages that day, but my mail carrier only dropped off one box. I figured this was just another case of erroneous tracking information on behalf of USPS, so I thought nothing of it. As the days went on, I started to worry. The tracking information said the package had been delivered, but I never got it. After sending communications back and forth between USPS and the company that handles orders from the Double Fine store, I was sent a replacement. This once actually made it to me safe and sound.
The first thing that took me by surprise was how small the Psychonauts‘ action figure’s box was. I really expected it to be bigger for $7. As I began opening the box, I mentally crossed my fingers in the hopes that I would get Raz. He’s the main character in the game after all. To my surprise, that’s exactly the figure I got. Unfortunately, my elation was short-lived.
I can’t speak for all the figures, but Raz is small. He’s only a little bit taller than a LEGO minifigure. Unlike LEGO minifigures, he has no articulation and the quality of the paint is pretty bad. The upper left side of Raz’s face is missing paint, his size of his pupils are vastly different from each other, the red and yellow paint from his hat bled together to create green splotches and there are many sections of uneven paint all over the figure.
As much as I hate to say it – this figure is not good. It’s definitely not worth $7 plus shipping unless you’re really into getting Psychonauts merchandise. There are so many good options out there for your money. The Borderlands 2 figures by Neca for example look really good, and they’re only $15.
It’s a shame. I had high hopes for this figure too. Here’s a video of my unboxing.
