With the holiday season fast approaching, you’re probably preparing an array of lists. Lists of games you want. Lists of games to get for friends and family. Lists of games to get for people you don’t really consider friends, but feel obligated to get something. It’s a lot of work, and there are a lot of pitfalls you could tumble into. Because while there have been a lot of great games released in 2013, a lot of crap has come out as well.
Which brings us to GamerTell’s list of games you don’t want to give or get for Christmas. (Or Hanukkah, or whatever you celebrate.) Most people probably don’t want to give or get these games. Unless you want to send some kind of mixed message to someone, in which case, I suppose you could use these as suggestions. Either way, keep an eye out for these titles on store shelves, and don’t be afraid to pass over them.
Aliens: Colonial Marines
System(s) PS3, Xbox 360, Windows PC
What’s Wrong With It? It’s an abysmal exercise in futility and perfect example of terrible game design. It doesn’t work well, looks terrible, and plays horribly. No. Just no. This is not how a FPS Aliens game, or any Aliens game period, should be made.
Angry Birds Star Wars
System(s) 3DS, PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One
Price? $29.99 on 3DS, $39.99 on PS3, Vita, Wii, and Xbox 360, $49.99 on PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One
What’s Wrong With It? That price! You can get Angry Birds: Star Wars with ads free on your iOS or Android device. Charging $ for a console or handheld version is piracy.
Dead Island Riptide
System(s) PS3, Xbox 360
What’s Wrong With It? Basically, it’s the original Dead Island all over again. Instead of getting massive gameplay improvements and lots of new content, it’s really more like an expansion pack. Which would have been fine, had it been created as an expansion and not sold as a full game. Granted, it is the best of the worst on this list, and could be considered practically passable.
Time and Eternity
What’s Wrong With It? Ever missed the days of CD-i gaming. You know, those Laserdisc games. Like Link: The Faces of Evil? Yeah, me either. The battle system had potential, but the story was terrible, the presentation abysmal, and the entire adventure tedious.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
System(s) PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360, Windows PC
Price? $29.99 on PS3/Xbox 360, $49.99 on Wii U/PC
What’s Wrong With It? It’s suffering from Aliens: Colonial Marines syndrome. Some ideas are good, and the source material it’s based on should have provided enough fodder for a great game, but it fails in execution. It’s a flawed game, especially when it comes to enemy AI, and gamers deserve better.
