Amazon is giving a whole new meaning to the term “air mail.” The company just revealed a potential upcoming delivery service called Amazon Prime Air. The goal of this new system is to deliver packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using a fleet of unmanned aerial drones. Amazon still has to go through the Federal Aviation Administration before it can implement Amazon Prime Air. It estimates the earliest this program can get off the ground is 2015.
Amazon released a short video detailing how Amazon Prime Air will work. Basically, the drone will attach itself to small Amazon-labeled containers before setting off to the necessary delivery address. The drone will land, release the package and return home.
It all seems very futuristic at the moment, and it’s most certainly a very complicated endeavor. However, Amazon has shown that it’s capable of pulling off some amazing feats.
