I hope you grabbed your free copies of Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics from GOG.com last month, because there’s a bit of a sticky situation ongoing. Namely, what everyone knew was going to happen, happened. Due to rights disputes between Interplay and Bethesda, those first three games in the Fallout series have temporarily disappeared. And they aren’t just gone from GOG.com, they aren’t available on Steam either.
It’s basically because Interplay published the first three Fallout games, and Bethesda has taken care of every installment after. GOG.com knew this was coming, which was why it was doing the giveaway. When a dispute comes up, the games are pulled until it’s resolved.
Don’t panic if you already own Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. If they’re already part of your GOG.com or Steam library, you can play, redownload, and enjoy them. This situation only pertains to people who haven’t purchased them and have decided, in the few days they’ve been gone, that they now must own them.
Fortunately, it is being fixed. Bethesda is working to get those three Fallout games back for people’s buying pleasure. Company representatives have said on Twitter that the wheels are in motion. However, it also says that it’s working on just getting them back on Steam. I wonder if there’s a bit of a grudge against GOG.com because it gave away those three games for free in December.
No matter. For now, sit back and enjoy all those Steam sale games you bought. You know you grabbed some of them. Go play them while you wait to see what happens here.
