The visual novel genre is absolutely exploding in North America, and it’s due in part to companies like Aksys Games. Which has, actually, just picked up another one. It’s XBlaze Code: Embryo, and it absolutely makes sense. After all, it is a BlazBlue visual novel, and Aksys handles all the BlazBlue games. Don’t expect XBlaze Code: Embryo to be too similar though, since its set 150 years before the events of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Still, there will be talk of grimoires and legacy weapons.
XBlaze Code: Embryo stars a high schooler named Touya Kagari. He’s attacked for some unknown reason, but a woman named Es steps in to defend him. She then becomes something of his bodyguard, even attending his school. Touya suddenly has to deal with his normal life, while also dealing with attacks by strange figures and magic. If you’re a fan of BlazBlue, I’m sure you’ll see some callbacks and similarities.
Like most visual novels, players change the story of XBlaze Code: Embryo by making decisions. This, in turn, alters the course of the tale and changes the ending. However, it also features a unique TOi system, which means anything Touya (you) chooses to read will change his future.
XBlaze Code: Embryo will be coming to both the PS3 and Vita this summer. An exact release date hasn’t been revealed yet, but I’m sure we’ll know something before, or by, E3 2014.
