It’s growing increasingly common for major console releases to have some kind of complimentary smartphone app to make the overall process more enjoyable. Knack had one, and so does Final Fantasy XIV. So, the Metal Gear Solid V iDROID makes sense too. iDROID is a little something extra for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes players to enjoy. Think of it as an immersive experience.
When Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes comes out on March 18, 2014, the Metal Gear Solid V iDROID will appear on iTunes and Google Play along with it. Oh, and Xbox Smart Glass is included as well. You just download it to your device of choice, and can then have it on hand as you play. It’s supposed to look like the interface Big Boss is using within Ground Zeroes, so you can pretend you’re him. Need to call in some air support? Go to your smartphone or tablet. Not sure where you are? There’s a map in your app! iDROID also keeps track of all the cassettes you’ve collected, and lets you listen to them at your leisure.
Of course, a supplemental app has to have a little something extra to get people downloading it, and iDROID does. It also has something of a time management simulation. Because you know casual games are everywhere. If you get tired of actually using iDROID while playing Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, you can just go build a little Mother Base instead. That’s the part of the iDROID app featured in the screenshot at the top of this page. You actually get to build up your own little military base, improving it and making sure it’s strong enough to stand up against any attacks. I bet you didn’t know Big Boss did stuff like this in his spare time.
I guess you could say that ties into the full game as well. It’s been announced that when you buy Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes for $29.99 on all systems, you also get The Phantom Pain DLC. This gives you resources that will be used for the Mother Base in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
