There’s nothing especially new or remarkable about a PlayStation Store sale. Sony’s pretty on top of things, which means we get at least one every month. The Spring Fever sale, for example, is pretty standard and comes around once every year, each March. Yet, out of all the PlayStation Store sales we’ve seen, the Spring Fever 2014 event could be the best.
To start, the initial indie game line-up is amazing. Every once in a while, a PlayStation Store sale will revolve around giving PlayStation Plus users a chance to grab new indie games at a discount the week they launch. That’s happening with Spring Fever 2014, which isn’t surprising. What is, is the fact that every game offered is absolutely remarkable. It starts with Awesomenauts Assemble and Master Reboot on March 4, with them launching at 20% less than normal, if you PlayStation Plus. Then, it continues with TowerFall Ascension and Vessel the next week, SteamWorld Dig and Luftrausers next, and closes with Fez. Even more promising is the prospect that Steamworld Dig, Luftrausers, and Fez are all cross-buy titles, meaning PS3, PS4, and Vita versions can all be picked up for the same price.
The inclusion of the long-awaited Fez is enough to make this portion of Spring Fever 2014 legendary, but the rest of the titles make this particular PlayStation Store sale even better. Almost every one is a highly anticipated game. Not to mention, each week bolsters the PS4’s library, as a new indie game is added to the system every single week.
That alone would have been enough to make the Spring Fever 2014 sale legendary. Yet, there’s a second part that makes it even better. In addition to the indie deals each week, there’s also a weekly series promotion. Each week, a major franchise will be part of this PlayStation Store sale. The week of March 4, 2014, four Need For Speed PS3, PSP, and Vita games will be $5 each. March 11, the ranks fill up with Call of Duty sales on Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Grand Theft Auto 3, IV, and V, as well as San Andreas, Liberty City, Liberty City Stories, Vice City, Vice City Stories, and Chinatown Wars follow up on March 18, so people can cut loose. Finally, it all closes with sales on BioShock, BioShock 2, and the BioShock Infinite DLC on March 25.
It’s just a ridiculously huge deal. And yes, the four series chosen are popular enough where many PS3, PSP, and Vita owners already own all of the games on sale. Still, the fact that they are there, and are reduced for this promotion, is an incredible feat. You don’t see a PlayStation Store sale like this every day. It’s a special event.
Since it’s only March, it isn’t as though the Spring Fever 2014 PlayStation Store sale can be ruled the best just yet. A big year is ahead of us, and who knows what Sony has planned for major holidays. However, it’s safe to say that, at the very least, this is the best Spring Fever sale thus far.
