That Brain’s 20,000 Leagues Above The Clouds is generating a lot of buzz. They describe the game as “a bit like Baldur’s Gate meets Pirates, with steampunk airships.” All I want to know now is how much of my money they’d like and when they’ll need it. That Brain is composed of former members of Media Molecule and Grin who list Little Big Planet 2, Bionic Commando: Rearmed and the 3D Bionic Commando reboot among their accomplishments.
In this game you’ll pilot an airship across the sky, stopping on floating islands to recruit crew members, get supplies and live that sky life. As you explore the sky and the islands, you’ll learn more about this mysterious world of floating islands and how best to survive in it.
The combat is point-and-click, with special abilities unlocked depending on which crew members you have.
Will you be honorable or commit skyfaring acts of piracy? Who will you bring along on these adventures? The game’s in development for PC and Macs, although That Brains says tablets may become an option later. It will start as a single-player game with the possibility of multiplayer later.
As to cost, That Brain’s 20,000 Leagues Above The Sea FAQ says it wants everyone to be able to pay as little or as much as they want to play the game. They stopped short of confirming free-to-play, but that certainly sounds like the type of experience they’re describing. It looks a lot like titles such as Skies of Arcadia, and the developers list Studio Ghibli works such as Spirited Away as a heavy influence.
There will be a beta, but That Brain warned it will be a while yet before that’s ready. You can sign up to be notified about that, and get more updates on the game’s progress here. I’ll see you in the skies!
