Divine Divinity was a better-than-it-had-any-right-to-be game when it came out over a decade ago, good enough to spawn a solid independent franchise, and every Divinity game for Larian Studios has been a strong (if under-appreciated) title, that’s added something to a genre with many irrelevant games. Divinity: Original Sin promises to be another groundbreaker, and will have at least one thing never before seen: a cow simulator.
Ok, what’s really being shown off here is the strength of the game editor, which will allow players to create their own adventures for their friends. Still, I’m a little curious about Cow Simulator 2014. I’ve playing role playing games where I’ve been a bunny, a dog, or even a mouse, but never a cow. I can’t help but be curious just how much adventure there is to be had as a cow.
There have been games with editors before, but they’ve always fallen a little flat in my opinion. A good role playing adventure is hard to find, and most adventures made with editors are little better than Harry Potter fan fiction–pale imitations, and then only if you’re lucky.
Larian’s track record is good enough that I’m very much looking forward to the adventures of Divinity: Original Sin. Turn based role playing in a world with the depth of Elder Scrolls? Count me in when Early Access starts on June 26th, 2014.
