Such a beautiful day out: sunny, warm, gentle breeze. Perfect weather to leave the front door open in the classroom. Class is almost over, the kids, as usual, have been simply great. One of those days where you really feel like you’re making a difference in the world, making children’s lives just a little bit happi….AAAAAAGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! What is that?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! They’re dead! They’re all dead!
Hello, my name is Lenna. A school teacher in the land of “randomly generated name”. This is my inception. While teaching class the other day, an Archangel came through my classroom and slaughtered all of my students. I have sworn revenge. I started my quest by picking up the conveniently placed wooden training sword in the shed next to my class. I wanted to do the right thing; I really did, and go directly to the authorities with what happened. Unfortunately, they are all at the palace which hasn’t actually been programmed yet, so I guess I’m on my own. I suppose I could go talk to that old man in town, not sure why we call it a town, when it is clearly just a library, but I presume the developers plans to add some more buildings later. To the library!
Wait, where is the library again? Why does the world need to be procedurally generated? Every time somebody starts a new game, and gives the world a new name, everything gets all mixed up and different. Whatever, I’m off to see where the “town” got placed this time. Hey, what’s this? A sleeping bat? Let me just inject some of my blood into it and…woohoo! New pet! Okay, so now me and my new blood-bound bet bat are going to head off to talk to the old man. Man, there sure are a lot of bushes in my way everywhere, really wish I had a real sword to cut through these with. And so many slimes! Guess I should kill them all before somebody gets hurt. THWACK! WHOOSH! SPLAT! There we go, much better. Hold up, what just fell from the sky? Was that a library book? Cool! Too bad I can’t read it, that’s okay, I’ll see if I can get it translated at the library, er I mean town, if I can ever find the place again.
Oh, hey, hey Batty, look at that! Is that a dungeon? I’ve never seen one placed there before, we should totes check it out! Don’t mind me evil bats, I’m just toodling through. Hmmmm, the door locked. Sorry guys, guess I gotta kill you all to get the key. SMASH!, STABBY-STAB! Oh look, the key, thankies! Alright, what do we have in this room? Is, is that a new sword? It is Batty, it is a new sword! Now we can cut down bushes! Oh man, those unkempt prairies have had it now. But first, let’s see if we can’t find the boss of this place. Just slide this block over here, move this one over yonder….there we go! Boss time. Is that…Nyan Cat? Sure looks like Nyan Cat, but why can’t I hit him? My shiny new sword does nothing! Now if you would just sit still and stop shooting fireballs at me, this would be over with a lot sooner. Well fine, how about I hurl your fireballs back at you with my shiny new sword, how do you like that? That’s right, explode in pain. Okay Batty, let’s see what kind of treasure awaits us. What is this, it’s a, a, a….I don’t know, what just happened? Everything just froze. Aw man, the game crashed again. Welp, looks like we get to relive all this over again, see you on the other side Batty, you were a loyal pet.
Lenna’s Inception is a top-down action RPG in the vein of Legend of Zelda from developer Bytten Studio. The game is styled like a Game Boy game – the graphics are very much straight out of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. The game world is procedurally generated based on what you name the world, so no two play-throughs will ever be the same. Even the order of the dungeons will change. Beyond that, the game is downright hilarious, and from what I’ve gotten to play so far, never takes itself seriously. My time with Lenna’s Inception so far has been great, and I can’t wait to see more.
Lenna’s Inception is available as Early Access now from their website, but beware that it is still rather unfinished and very Beta. Beyond the game locking every time I collected a certain item, I ran into a bunch of other random, strange problems as well. Such as the game forcing me to play with my SNES controller I have plugged in with an adapter because it was the only input device it saw for some reason. Given the styling of the game, that’s almost more of a feature than a bug.
If you like Zelda-type games then I strongly recommend you go grab up Lenna’s Inception and give it a try, once all the wrinkles are ironed out, and the palace gets programmed, I am confident that this should shape up to be an excellent and fun title.
