The remakes keep coming as Amazon now has Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition available for pre-order for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. I can’t wait. I know I’m part of the problem buying into yet another last generation remake, but this game was special to me and I’m all for getting it into more hands to make the potential for a long-lasting franchise a reality.
As an Asian American, I loved Sleeping Dogs because it was one of the few video games with a modern Asian setting. Its Hong Kong kung fu action was right in my wheelhouse. It would be a shame to let this franchise go to waste.
Sleeping Dogs failed to meet Square Enix’s unreasonable sales expectations in 2012 despite having sold an estimated 1.75 million copies. That’s a great number for most games, but not good enough for a game Square Enix allegedly hoped to sell twice that amount. Releasing a definitive edition for the current generation consoles gives Square Enix a shot at recouping costs on Sleeping Dogs and potentially sealing the deal on a sequel that is rumored to be in development.
More and more publishers are jumping on the video game remake bandwagon for the PS4 and Xbox One. It’s hard to begrudge them for it since remakes like Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and The Last of Us Remastered being two of the most graphically impressive games in 2014. I’d love to see more publishers put time and energy into more new properties, but I want to play a remastered Sleeping Dogs.
Sleeping Dogs has a placeholder date of December 31, 2014 on Amazon. The definitive edition comes with the original gameplus all of the downloadable content. A limited edition art book is also available as a pre-order bonus. The retail price is listed at $59.99.
