Online Gaming Widens Its Horizons

PC and PS3 gamers are on a collision course, as another game Brothers in Arms will come pre-loaded with cross-platform online gameplay feature that will allow PC and PS3 gamers, who own a copy of the game, to compete against each other online.

This has been made possible courtesy of Epic’s Unreal Engine 3, which now incorporates licensed Gamespy online technology. Since there are many games that have this game engine at its core, more and more games are expected to hop onto the cross-platform playability bandwagon.

The technology not only makes it possible for gamers to lock horns across platforms but it also lets them use other standard Gamespy online features like leaderboards, tournaments and matchmaking features. There is a likelihood of Epic’s upcoming game Unreal Tournament 3 will include these features.

Cross-platform gameplay is available across Windows computers and Xbox 360 through the closely-knit Games for Windows Live and Xbox Live online services for Windows and Xbox 360, respectively. This feature can be sampled through the game Shadowrun.

Cross-platform online gameplay will truly earn its name when gamers across all platforms (PC, Xbox 360 and PS3) can go head-to-head against each other.
