The next Destiny expansion will be named “The Taken King” and release September 15, 2015, according to marketing details leaked to Kotaku. The DLC is said to be priced at $40, $5 more than the game’s original season pass which included the Dark Below and House of Wolves expansions.
The Taken King will allegedly fill in the oft-discussed third subclass for each of the game’s three classes. Hunters will receive a void class featuring a gravity bow super; Titans will pick up a solar build brandishing a flaming hammer; and Warlocks will fill in their arc box with an electrical storm ability.
The established gamut of new content—namely strike and PvP maps and playlists—will also be included, along with a new raid starring Oryx, father of Crota, the final boss of the Crota’s End raid. Whether The Taken King’s raid is the same one Bungie has been promising would come to House of Wolves, which introduced the Prison of Elders horde mode but no raid, remains to be seen.
Most interestingly, a new race known as the Taken is said to be included in The Taken King. Given the structure of the vanilla game, with each of its four enemy factions effectively assigned to their own planet, it’s likely that the Taken will also bring a new planet with them to house this new content. Mercury is the word on the grapevine due to the planet’s role in existing PvP maps and the Crucible event Trials of Osiris, coupled with its suspicious absence from core missions.
Although Bungie has yet to formally address the leak, the company did mention E3 plans in its most recent Destiny update, promising “there will be news to follow.” So, at most, we’re a week away from a proper Taken King reveal.
