The international game competition Game&Game World Championship (GNGWC) kicked off second season with the preliminary round in Europe earlier this month (August 2007). The international event has gamers from Korea, Europe, Southeast Asia, Japan and the US competing in preliminary rounds in each country and then against each other in the finals on December 1, 2007, in Seoul, Korea.

The six first place winners from each preliminary event (one for each PC game in the competition) will be sent to Korea to compete in the finals while runners-up winners will receive a digital camera, MP3 player or a DVD player. Some regional runners-up winners for specific games will also be sent to Korea to compete. Besides plane tickets and hotel accommodations, the Grand Prize winner for each of the six games in the competition will receive $5,000 (USD) while the second and third place winners will receive $3,000 and $1,000, respectively. A total of $54,000 is being awarded across all winners so don’t let the GNGWC’s home page promise of winning $54K confuse you.

The US preliminaries are scheduled to take place September 17 through October 11, 2007, with the final round being held on October 20, 2007, in Las Angeles, CA at the Cyberia Internet Cafe.

The event was created by Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA) to help promote Korean online games throughout the World. With 1,070,000 gamers participating in the event last year, the tactic appears to work pretty well since most people will want to purchase the game to practice before going head-to-head with other gamers.

Although only three games were used in the competitions last year, the the roster has been increased to six:

  • Shot Online (On-Net)
  • Bomb ‘n Dash (Innodis)
  • Silkroad Online (Joymax)
  • Record of Lunia War (allm)
  • Navy Field (SDEnternet)
  • Warrock (Dream Execution)

The beauty of the competition is that anyone can compete and, although the money is not an astronomical amount, gamers can at least get a free trip to Korea as well as international bragging rights.
