Sony has run out of 60 GB PS3’s in its internal inventory with all the 60 GB SKU’s being purchased by retailers. The 60 GB PS3 is being phased out and there will be no more production of this SKU. A $100 price cut for the 60 GB SKU was announced in July 2007 along with the launch of he 80 GB PS3. Ever since the price-drop, there has been a jump in PS3 sales with gamers trying to get their hands onto the cheaper 60 GB PS3 before it is sold-out.

Sony said it is not sure about how many PS3’s are in retailers’ warehouses or on store shelves. An early 60 GB sell out might usher in an early price-cut for the 80 GB PS3. Sony has implicitly hinted at a price-cut for the 80 GB PS3 but analysts consider it an inevitability.

If the coveted 60 GB PS3 quickly disappears from store shelves then Sony might drop the price of the 80 GB system just in time to cash in on this holiday season. It might be best to ask your near and dear ones to buy you a 60 GB PS3 for $499.99 now, so you can trade it in for an 80 GB PS3 later.
