PlayStation 3 80GB modelAfter the price dropped for the 60GB PlayStation 3, it resulted in a complete sell-out of the console from Sony’s online store, Sony Style, . A reporter from Gamepro interviewed David Karraker, senior director of corporate communications for Sony, and asked if Sony was just holding a batch for a later time. Karraker said there were no more 60GB consoles left in the SCEA warehouses.

Following Gamepro’s interview with Karraker, Sony announced that it has replenished the online store’s supply of the 60GB version by shifting inventory from its retail stores to the site to meet web demand.

I’m not the only gamer who has expressed concerns that the supplies will suddenly dry up again and we may have to break down and shell out the extra money for the 80GB model. Sadly, I visited the site after pay day for a chance to order one and noticed it said “back order.” I guess I won’t get a PS3 60GB in time for the release of Metal Gear Solid 4. Bummer.

According to Karraker, there were still a few out there on the shelves, somewhere but it is hard for him to know exactly where:

“We don’t have visibility as to if that is on their store shelves or in their warehouses at this time. However, based on inventory reports from our retailers, there is ample supply still left in the channel,” Karraker said. “We won’t be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.”

Whether or not Sony will produce additional 60GB models or drop the price of the 80GB model is still a rumor. I can only hope will Sony slash the price of the PS3 80GB and make one little gamer girl very happy. Until then, I will wipe the tear from my eye and continue playing my PS2 while secretly pretending its a PS3.
