Devil May Cry 4Capcom has confirmed that it will be offering a free downloadable demo of Devil May Cry 4 (DMC4) to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 owners through the Xbox Live Marketplace and Playstation Store, respectively.

Slated for release in early 2008, the demo will allow players to assume the mantle of Nero, the series’ new protagonist, in a variety of different locales taken from areas in the full game. The demo will introduce Nero’s “Devil Bringer” power, which allows players to manipulate enemies and certain parts of Nero’s surroundings from long distances, adding another element of gameplay to the traditional shoot-and-slash that the DMC series is known for. The demo will conclude with a spectacular battle between Nero and the demon Berial.

DMC4 represents the latest in Capcom’s popular but somewhat controversial series. While the first DMC was hailed as a wonderful mesh of flair and addictive gameplay, the second installment did nothing but disappoint eager fans of the original with uninspired direction and cumbersome controls.

DMC3 was a definite return to form as far as fun factor was involved but it was also touted as being notoriously difficult with a ridiculous learning curve that hindered the experience of many players. DMC4 looks to follow in the previous installment’s footsteps but the most questionable aspect of the game is whether or not fans will be able to accept Nero as a protagonist. Konami already dropped a similar bomb on players with Metal Gear Solid 2‘s Raiden and if history seeks to repeat itself, Nero may find more than just devils crying over this game.
