On January 31, 2008, Sega will be shutting down the servers for the Xbox version of Phantasy Star Online: Episode I & II, according to a recent post in Ars Technca. The company has announced the shutdown for Japanese servers only, but a similar fate should be expected for US servers as well.
The announcement spells doom for the long-running series, which has had an installment running online since the release of addictive MMO Phantasy Star Online on Sega’s Dreamcast in 2001. As the story suggests, the Japanese Blue Burst Episode IV will still be up and running online after the closing, making it the final chapter still online.
Those of you still enjoying the sci-fantasy action online, savor it while you can. You may be a WOW convert soon.
