According to a recent article on Forbes.com, the videogame industry netted an impressive $40 billion in hardware and software sales worldwide in 2007. Looking at the numbers breakdown, it seems that games released as part of established franchises dominated (citing Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, and Madden NFL 08), along with games aimed at children, the first person shooter genre, and the duel success of Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3. Activision was also named a big winner, with the aformentioned GH III and COD4 and the Activision Blizzard merger.

The article also notes Microsoft’s difficulties – especially the “red ring of death” fiasco (wherein many an Xbox 360 malfunctioned), former Vice President of Interactive Entertainment Peter Moore’s resignation, and the loss of Bungie studios (Halo).

Finally, ending on a anticipatory note, the piece ends with a list of most-wanted games for 2008, including Grand Theft Auto IV, Gears of War 2, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, and Spore.

I couldn’t help but notice a lack of hotly anticipated games for the PS3, which surely include LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4. Otherwise, its a nice wrap-up of the year, complete with all the sales figures you could shake a stick at.
