One of Sony’s biggest Playstation 3 announcements at CES regarded the return of one of the Playstation 2′s most popular features, the Dualshock controller. Sony’s new Dualshock 3 controller is nearly identical to the SIXAXIS controller, which comes with the PS3, both in appearance and functionality. The only difference is that it also vibrates.
Sony’s CES announcement revealed that the Dualshock 3 controller is expected to be released in North America sometime in the first quarter of 2008. The announcement did not include a definite release date or a possible retail price. Engadget reports that the Japanese Dualshock 3 controller is retailing for around $50. Sadly, Sony announced that the new controller will not be included with PS3 units. The CES 2008 presentation of the Dualshock 3 is the first official mention of the controller in the US.
The Dualshock 3 was initially announced at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show. A report from Gamespot regarding the TGS Dualshock 3 presentation states that the Playstation Store will offer patches for previously released games to make them Dualshock 3 compatible.
