On January 16, 2008 dtp, Wizarbox and ANACONDA, the forces behind the upcoming point-and-click game So Blonde, announced that 6 mini-games will be included in the game. Sadly, all of the mini-games are clones of familiar titles. For example “Coconut Adventure” is similar to the Game and Watch title Oil Panic and “Blonde Blonde Revolution” is similar to Dance Dance Revolution and Taiko Drum Master. An “Instant Win Button” will be included in each mini-game, so if it is too difficult, you can skip it.
The story of So Blonde is vapid and cliche. It follows the exploits of teenage Sunny Blonde, who just happens to be blonde, after she falls off of a luxury cruise ship. By some fluke she ends up landing on a random island 100 years in the past. Players are charged with playing mini-games and clicking around to save her from her unfortunate circumstances so she can shop again. The game will be released March 14, 2008 in German territories, with others to possibly follow.
Though I’m a brunette, I find the whole setup insulting. Part of it is the star, an insult to all women, which the press release states is more shaken up about having no cell signal or makeup than being separated from her friends and family. I think the most insulting part is the “Instant Win Button” in the knock-off minigames. It feels to me like the developer is implying players, both men and women, may not be smart enough to win a simple mini-game. Someone who is smart enough to play an intricate point-and-click adventure should be able to handle a one to two minute knock-off of Oil Panic. So Blonde may be trying to be funny, but really it’s just stupid.
