EA Games has announced that Battlefield Heroes, a cartoon-style online multiplayer shooter based on the popular series of the same name, will be free for download when it is released in summer of 2008. Instead of gamers having to buy the title at retail stores, Battlefield Heroes will be absolutely free to play.
Supported by adverts and micro payments, Heroes will mark EA’s first venture into add-driving revenue in the Western markets. South Korea has already had some success with their release of FIFA, which grosses more than $1 million dollars a month through in-game sales.
If all goes well for Battlefield Heroes, EA is hoping that Heroes could become a model for other franchise that they own.
Swedish developer DICE, responsible for Battlefield 1942 and BF2: Modern Combat, is in charge of Heroes look and design. Fans of Valve’s Team Fortress 2 will no doubt feel right at home with Battlefield Heroes cartoon look and game play.
