Makena Technologies and MTV have opened virtual skate parks based on popular television shows Rob and Big and Life of Ryan where visitors can create their own boards, perform various tricks on different ramps and discuss the hit shows via text messaging or voice chat.
No more waiting for the little kids to skate past you just to jump a ramp or running into others to make that one cool move you’ve been practicing all month long. Nope, not anymore. Brought to the net by the makers of There.com, another virtual world community, virtual skateboarders will be able to participate in skating events online, join teams and enter into competitions. Players can create their 3D virtual selves as well as design their own skateboards, just about everything is customizable.
The site seems pretty easy to navigate, when you first click on the skate park they ask that you create your virtual self. Once you register you can create your board and start skating. The site is free, once you create your avatar you download and install a virtual program for your avatar to play in. Although its not mentioned anywhere on the website, the skate park program is intended for gamers ages 14 and older (according to the Terms of Use policy). This is definitely an online PC game, so make sure you have plenty of room on your hard drive to play. The program nearly choked my computer just dressing my avatar and since I’m a Firefox user, I have to switch between Internet Explorer and Firefox to play.
According to There.com, they recommend using computers with a CPU speed between 800MHz and 2.3GHz with Pentium III, and at minimum 256MB of RAM with 500MB of free hard disc space. The OS requirement is Windows Vista, XP or 2000 with at least a 56k Internet connection to run smoothly. Those using computers with CPU speeds greater than 2.4GHz should use the same specs as minimum but added any DirectX 8 compatible graphics card with 32MB of VRAM.
