Child gets injured by his PSP

A 12-year-old child from Farmington Hills in Detroit, MI, (USA) has been injured by a PSP he was carrying in his pants pocket. Apparently the device overheated causing serious burns to the child’s leg after burning through two layers of clothing.

Sheilah Clay told WDIV-TV that her son Harold was at school when suddenly he felt his PSP started heating up. The PSP kept getting hotter to the point where it burned through his clothes and started burning his leg causing him to drop to the ground in pain. After being helped by a teacher, emergency workers reached Harold and treated his wound.

The battery seems to be the most likely culprit for the burns due to the fact that damaged batteries are known for overheating but, according to Mrs. Clay, the PSP was turned off and it had the original battery. This seems to be an isolated case because there have been few or no reports of PSP batteries malfunctioning. Officials from Farmington Hills Fire Department are investigating what could have caused the device to overheat.

This is the first time I’ve heard of something like this with a PSP. I read about some iPods and laptops but not portable gaming devices so I’m sure it was just a hardware glitch. I have never been an advocate for the PSP but this clearly was a case of terrible luck for this child and it should not be taken on the PSP line. Anti-game fanatics just need more excuses to blame everything on games and consoles and now they might take up on bodily harm. I can picture a Fox reporter talking about this story and probably saying the boy was playing Mass Effect when suddenly his pants caught fire.
