With all big events and announcements going at this year’s Game Developers’ Conference, some of the more obscure things tended to not get the attention they so richly deserved, like SNK’s display of Metal Slug 7, which DS Fanboy found last Wednesday (February 25, 2008).
MS7 marks the first time a main, numbered iteration of the series is not first hitting the arcades, a fate that seemed to be in the making given how hard it was to find a Metal Slug 6 machine.
Otherwise, it’s very much what’s expected from the franchise: an orgy of troops, bullets, military hardware and destruction. All six characters from the previous installment return, each with a new default weapon, which could potentially be a better way to differentiate characters than their differing attributes in MS6.
The game reportedly (if 1UP is to be believed) follows the same old linear play-style of the arcade games, which is kind of disappointing. Given the medium, I was hoping SNK Playmore would attempt another completely open-ended Metal Slug, like the two games made for the ill-fated Neo Geo Pocket Color. Oh well. Maybe next time.
