It’s the age of diversion. If you don’t have at least three browser windows up, a pair of media players running, doing some VoIP gabbing and have an MMO ready to alt-tab into, I can only imagine how bored you must be.
I’ve got just the thing. TinyWarz is a turn-based strategy MMO that runs in browser. I think you’ll find it has enough grinding and army building to fill whatever clickless seconds are left in your life.
It’s a bit obtuse to navigate, but I can help you out there, too. Here’s a guide to the quickest way to the battlefield in TinyWarz.
The most important thing is to get some music going. Some Autechre or acid house probably couldn’t hurt. But, heck, there’s enough downtime that you could probably put a movie on and keep up.
After you’ve signed up and are in the menu screen, head to the “Modify Units” tab. Click on the GP next to a crew member and then apply it to a vehicle by clicking the box next to “crew:”. Make sure you hit confirm. Now hit the “View Army” tab and click on the “[In Reserve]” next to vehicles, which will put them in your army. Heck, might as well take all of them. Only live once, right? Remember always to hit the confirm button on the top right in menu screens. Now you’ve made an army.
Now let’s take this rag-tag band on the road. Goto the deployment tab, and head toward Riona, skipping the training planet Taris. Most likely, there’s not a whole lot happening on the noob planet except more walking to get to any action.
Once, you’re on the ground, left click on a vehicle and set its waypoint north, or west, or wherever until you find some action. If you find some ore deposits, take your Hedgehog to them and find the mine action under the command menu. Otherwise, set your artillery (Striker Assault Vehicle and Viper Hovertank) on some level one enemies. You’ll be “missing” a lot in the early days, but stick with it.
A few things to keep in mind on the combat field: If you’ve got nothing to do, end your turn early. You’ll get a slight command bonus every once in a while. Command points let you deploy and are part of the cost to build more units. Ore is important, so guard your mining craft. And be careful, why don’t you? Getting back to the menu screen takes at least three turns. Otherwise, you’ll have to sit there and take the hits.
That should be enough to get you started grinding, and then on to the bigger and better things. That “market” tab sure looks alluring.
