Live-action Star Wars TV series on hold until 2010

After 2005’s release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, fans thought they had seen the end of the beloved franchise, which closed the epic six-part series. A few months later, fans were pleased to hear that George Lucas wasn’t finished with Star Wars just yet.

The Expanded Universe, as the live-action television series is being called for now, will be set between Episode III and IV, covering the 20-year gap between The Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. While the new series was scheduled to air sometime in 2009, word comes from Lucas via ComingSoon that the expected live-action show won’t make it to the air until late 2010 but they are “working on it now, doing the scripts and everything.” When released, fans will get to see how the Empire gripped the galaxy after the events of Episode III, and how the Rebel Alliance came to be (hints were already shown in deleted scenes on the Episode III DVD).

All isn’t lost yet as the Clone Wars computer animated series, which is also being produced entirely by Lucas, has already finished half of the planned 100 episodes. The series is still on schedule to premier on both the Cartoon Network and TNT Fall 2008. Better still, the first three episodes will be released as a feature film Summer 2008.

“We looked at it on the big screen and it looked so beautiful and great that we said, ‘Gee, we can make a feature just like this.’ So we did and got all the people, got all the stuff and said, ‘Let’s make a feature.’” Lucas said.
