Microsoft says, “No Blu-ray for you.”

Microsoft has officially announced that Blu-ray reading technology will not be added to the Xbox 360. Previously an HD DVD add-on was created and made available for the system, and many speculated that Microsoft would work with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to create a similar Blu-ray device for the console. However Vnunet reports that Aaron Greenburg, the Xbox 360 group project manager, has confirmed that there will be no Blu-ray for the 360.

Instead, Greenburg stated that Microsoft would be relying on downloaded material. Microsoft will be providing high-definition media through downloads rather than commissioning a Blu-ray add-on or requiring customers to purchase new hardware add-ons. Greenburg stated that Microsoft is of the belief that digital downloads would be the best way to distribute materials in the future.

I totally agree. I love how the Playstation Store is handling PSP downloads. I love the fact that, if there is a new demo or game that I want, I could go to the Playstation Store and download it. I truly think that downloadable games are the future for portable gaming, and I’m happy to see that Microsoft is looking towards exploring digital downloads as their sole means of media distribution.
