lost planet coloniesCapcom has released new details about Lost Planet: Colonies, which is due to be released in Japan May 2008. Lost Planet: Colonies is due to be released on the Xbox 360 and PC though a North America launch date has not yet been announced.

Lost Planet: Colonies isn’t a sequel but instead a gold edition to Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions which was released early 2007 on the Xbox 360 and sold more than a million units in Japan, North America and Europe. This doesn’t mean that Colonies is little more than new packaging, as a number of major game play elements, maps, bad guys and new modes have been included in this special edition to one of 2007’s best action shooters.

One of the more noticeable additions is the new first-person perspective, giving players the opportunity to play through the entire game as if it was a FPS, which can be done with a simple option in the main menu screen. Much like Halo, when the player enters into one of the numerous heavy VS suits, the camera shifts back to a third-person perspective making it easier to engage the Akrid trying to encircle you. A score attack and time trail have also been added.

Score Attack will throw waves of Akrid monsters at the player, challenging gamers to score as many kills as they can as you play through the single-player campaign, similar to Call of Duty 4 (s) own arcade mode. While Time Trial Battles is pretty much what you think it would be with a little twist. Players will battle against the first stage boss and, depending on how quickly gamers can defeat this first boss, their final time will ultimately determine which next boss players will get to face off against. All weapons and ammunition will carry over to the next round, making it harder with each turn to reach the final boss.

As for gamers who want some revenge against any snow pirate or Akrid that gave you trouble the first time through, Off Limit mode gives gamers the chance to play through the game a second time only now you’ll be allowed to run through the game with unlimited ammunition and more powerful weapons that don’t drain your thermal or have to be reloaded. Its just a good-old bug hunt at its truest form.

There will be plenty more additions to Lost Planet: Colonies, such as new multiplayer maps, new in-game enemies, new weapons and VS suits and a human vs Akrid multiplayer mode. Luka will also be a playable character, but no word yet if she is playable in single-player or only multiplayer.

  1. When I heard the title a few weeks back, I assumed it was gonna be an MMO. Weird.
