Older gamers may remember when Nintendo released the Super Game Boy and teased us with color screenshots of Metroid II: Return of Samus. For the past three years, some dedicated fans have been busy one-upping that by working on Project AM2R, a full-blown PC remake of the often-forgotten and derided Game Boy Metroid. They released a tech demo last Saturday (March 22, 2008) to show how far along they’ve come.
As you can likely tell from the screenshot above or the videos below, this Metroid: Zero Mission-style revival looks damn good.
Metroid II has been in even further need of a remake than the original game. While its predecessor had novelty on its side and was rendered practically unplayable by gameplay advancements made in the following decades, the second game offered little more than even more monotonous design than anything before or since.
With hope, these guys will avoid the ever-dreaded Cease & Desist order and elevate Metroid II to the status it should’ve held when it was first released back in 1992.
But for now, gawk at some some screenshots.
